Fieldwork first
Every commission starts on foot. I scout in all weathers so that when your day arrives, I already know where the light will fall.
About the studio
Tarnlight Outdoor Imaging is a one-photographer studio devoted to wild country and the people who love it.
Hello — I am Julian
I photograph the Lake District the way it actually feels: cold dawns, sudden clearings, rain you can see coming a mile off. My work covers high fells, fell-side weddings, roaming lifestyle stories and portraits taken in open air — always with available light and never rushed.
Before Tarnlight I spent six seasons assisting expedition photographers across Scotland and Wales. That fieldcraft — reading weather, waiting out light, carrying less and seeing more — sits inside every frame I make now.

How I work
Every commission starts on foot. I scout in all weathers so that when your day arrives, I already know where the light will fall.
No flash rigs on ridgelines, no staged weather. Dawn, dusk and storm-light do the heavy lifting — I just keep up with them.
Selected frames become signed giclée editions on cotton rag, made to hang for decades. The shop holds the current collection.
In the studio
Back at the Ambleside studio, every frame is graded by hand — never batch-filtered. Colour stays true to the hour it was taken, and black-and-white conversions are printed, pinned and judged on paper before they ever reach you.
Kit & craft
Two weather-sealed bodies, three primes, one battered tripod and a bothy bag. I print large from careful files rather than chasing megapixels — sharp where it matters, gentle where it counts.
If you are planning a fell-side wedding, an expedition brand story or a portrait with weather in it, come say hi — I answer every enquiry personally.
